1989 is seen as the 'birth year' of the Calabrian toxic waste scandals of the local 'Ndrangheta mafia: 60 tonnes of low-level radioactive hospital waste were accidentally discovered in the province of Cosenza and illegally incinerated. Nearly 600 landfills in Calabria are now under government control. The harmful, toxic and radioactive materials come from northern Italy, Germany and France, among other countries. The environmental organisation Legambiente has been warning for decades that Calabria was becoming "the garbage dump of Europe". Nothing has happened. A powerful coalition of mafiosi, secret service agents, politicians and businessmen is still obstructing the investigation. Journalist Sandro Mattioli travels to Germany, France and Italy in search of clues.
