Child theft occurred in many countries around the world, but nowhere on such a scale as in Spain: around 300,000 babies were stolen there from their mothers during and even after the Franco dictatorship and sold to childless couples with forged documents. At first politically motivated, but soon a lucrative business in which the Catholic Church was particularly involved.
